What in the world would possess a sixteen year old boy to wake up at 5:30 in the morning on the first Saturday morning of spring break? The more I think about that the more absurd it was to wake up and hear him in the shower already. A Saturday morning in our house is always quiet until Kira is heard bouncing in her bed and calling “ morning”. I am wondering if Jordan’s behavior might make him eligible for some sort of freak award. I ask again what motivates a teen to make this crazy choice?
What all teenagers crave: independence.
He had permission to drive to Katy where all of his friends live, and so there he was at nine in the morning knocking on his friend’s front door. I doubt they were even up yet, and he had just driven three hours to the east. As far as Jordan is concerned, he’s not missing one hour of being in Katy. It is interesting how fast he will hop into gear when it is something he wants to do. (could that be a defining character trait of a teenager? I think so.)
He also wanted to test out his latest project. The truck we let him drive gets terrible gas mileage, so he researched it and discovered with a better exhaust system he could get five more miles per gallon. Then he did the math and told us how long before it would pay for itself, (months). So we said order it, he did, it arrived and he spent a Saturday afternoon at the repair shop while it was installed. He was itching to measure his gas mileage on his trip to Katy. He loves cars. He loves hanging out with his friends. There is also the cutest girl with long silky hair and the best laugh here in Katy. That’s all I’ll say.
So, perhaps with that recipe it’s not so strange at all that in the wee hours of a Saturday morning he was on his way to the place where he will always call his home town. A few hours later, the rest of us were on our way there as well. I think we were a little more rested than he was.
We are all in great need of a vacation, a rest, a break from school, work, and home life. We are spending the weekend in Katy and then Monday morning we are on our way to Florida to spend the week with Craig’s parents who winter on Anna Maria Island. I’m bringing all of my camera lenses! I’m excited to prod and poke my creative self to come out and play this week.
